ALAN F. BLAKLEY, ESQ.
Alan’s practice is focused primarily in the areas of litigation in federal courts, intellectual property, and methods of controlling business risk in transactions. An experienced litigator, Alan has been engaged in the practice of complex litigation, including class actions, since 1991. His talent as a litigator and ability to make practical application of the law is demonstrated by the diverse subject matter of his prior cases, which include constitutional rights, administrative law, tax withholding, securities fraud, insurance bad faith, contract violations, and intellectual property. He has also helped corporate clients manage risk based on document retention and electronic records.
In addition to his private practice of law, Alan has taught as a law professor at the University of Montana School of Law and Thomas M. Cooley School of Law – teaching federal civil procedure, evidence, contracts, real property and trial practice. Alan currently teaches at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, in the LLM of International Business Transactions program, where he teaches International Dispute Resolution and Protecting Intellectual Property in International Business Transactions.
He is a frequent speaker at continuing education programs, trains federal judges in electronic evidence issues working with The Federal Judicial Center, and trains new lawyers in trial skills through the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (“NITA”).
A prolific writer, he has written seven books focusing on litigation topics and the use of electronic information in litigation. In Alan’s spare time he enjoys reading, travelling, playing with Jax the Dog, wandering the mountains or seashore. Alan also spends a significant amounts of time volunteering in the legal community, including the following activities:
National Institute of Trial Advocacy. National headquarters in Boulder County, this organization provides training for attorneys in trial practice. Alan Blakley volunteers to be a faculty member for a week-long training program once each year since 2009.
Colorado Bar Association, Joint Disaster Legal Services Task Force, 2013. Alan Blakley volunteered to aid victims of the 2013 flood in the Boulder-Larimer County areas by providing answers to legal questions.
Rocky Mountain Inventors Association. From 2011 to 2013, Alan Blakley has volunteered to present programs in Denver and Fort Collins for start-up companies and inventors about legal issues.
Rocky Mountain Innosphere, Fort Collins, Colorado. From 2011 to 2013 Alan Blakley has volunteered on panel discussions for new businesses to help them understand legal issues that confront them.
Northern Colorado Business Report. Alan Blakley volunteered to write a column on legal issues to be published in the Northern Colorado Business Report twice monthly to help businesses understand legal issues that may be changing in the marketplace.
Federal Bar Association. Alan Blakley served as national chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and national chair of the Federal Litigation Section as well as serving on the editorial board of The Federal Lawyer magazine and writing a regular column for that magazine.
